Postpartum hair loss: a common phenomenon

Becoming a mother is a major milestone, both physically and psychologically. After birth, the body undergoes major hormonal changes and daily life becomes more intense.

Most new mothers then notice spectacular hair loss, sometimes by handfuls during brushing or shampooing. This phenomenon can be worrying, but it is perfectly normal and temporary.

During pregnancy: enhanced hair

Under the effect of hormones (estrogen, progesterone, prolactin), hair shedding is delayed. Result: hair appears thicker, shinier, and stronger.

It’s a true “hair honeymoon” for many expectant mothers.

After childbirth: a sudden hormonal drop

Once the baby is born, estrogen levels drop rapidly. This variation often leads to massive and sudden hair loss.

This is known as postpartum telogen effluvium, a phenomenon that usually occurs between the 2nd and 4th month after childbirth.

How long does postpartum hair loss last?

In most cases, shedding lasts for several months and then gradually slows down. Hair naturally regains its balance around the baby’s first birthday.

Aggravating factors

Although hormones are the main cause, other factors can worsen this loss:

  • Physical and emotional stress linked to motherhood,

  • Fatigue due to lack of sleep,

  • Vitamin and mineral deficiencies, common after pregnancy.

👉 The good news: with a balanced diet, good lifestyle habits and, if needed, an appropriate dietary supplement, hair regrowth resumes naturally.
