Why do men lose their hair ?

Hair is just as important to men as it is to women, whether they see it as an attractive feature or a defining part of their personality. Hair loss is something that most men fear. The question is what causes this phenomenon. Why do men lose their hair?

Male hair loss is a natural phenomenon that is part of the hair’s natural life cycle. As long as it is only a few hairs a day, there’s nothing to worry about. But not all men are alike. Some experience more hair loss than others.

Causes of male hair loss

There are several different factors in understanding the cause of male hair loss.

It could be:

Hormonal/Genetic

Genetics are a key factor. Baldness, a condition that can lead to partial or total hair loss, is partly hereditary.

Is baldness passed down from father to son? A UK study of 52,000 men in 2017 showed that baldness is genetically inherited mainly from the mother1.

Androgenic hair loss2 is the most common form, affecting up to 50% of the adult male population3,4. Androgenic baldness is caused by the effect of androgens on the hair follicle in genetically predisposed individuals5,6.

Nutritional

Whilst a poor diet alone can’t be held responsible for hair loss, it can be a catalyst in the process. Vitamins and minerals in the diet play a crucial role in the physiology of hair7-9. Poor nutrition, including the use of alcohol and nicotine, accelerates the hair loss process and affects the appearance and shine of the hair.

Psychological

We experience a range of emotions throughout the day, including stress. Stress is recognised as a contributing factor to male hair loss.

Why? Intense and/or chronic stress disrupts the hair’s natural cycle, which leads to more hair falling out than growing.

While stress and hormonal changes can cause hair loss, the changing seasons are also to blame. Spring and autumn bring significant changes in the weather. This can affect the rhythm and speed of the hair growth cycle, leading to increased hair loss
